My work is about domesticity but it isn't feminine. I have tried to communicate the domesticity and family concept through creating types of spaces that would commonly be found in a family household. Usually there is a focal point and the rest of the space is left up to the viewer to fill in. The pieces all show a sort of over exaggerated scene so that the viewer can understand the scenario and feelings even if the situation isn't familiar to them.
I usually work with very traditional drawing materials, graphite and paper, but I have recently been working with non traditional techniques such as embroidery on paper, cut paper, a little collage and 3 dimensional objects. My process starts out with a feeling or memory that I expand on, in lists or word webs and then narrow down into a visual. I often have many source materials and a few pertinent artist references.
My intent with my recent projects is to continue with my theme of family dynamics but to make it more light hearted, laughable and fun. The overall theme between pieces is that from far away they might look like a normal home configuration but up close things are very abnormal.
